Do-It-Yourself Safety & Security Window Film

Security and safety window films perform best on annealed glass and are not recommended for tempered glass without the use of an anchoring system;  Where possible, window films should be installed behind the window stops.

Identifying Tempered and Annealed Glass

Tempered glass is also known as toughened glass or safety glass.  It is regular annealed glass that has been manufactured to make it stronger.  It is harder to break than annealed glass and when it does break the pieces are small and crumbling versus annealed glass which may crack into longer shards.

Tempered glass is used in automobiles and most commercial structures.  In residences, tempered glass is typically found in doors, side-lights, sky-lights and showers.  To identify whether or not glass is tempered, check each of the corners of the window or door.  Tempered glass windows will usually be etched in one of the corners.

Anchoring Safety & Security Window Films

When installing security window films on tempered glass the film should be anchored with structural silicone caulking, we recommend Dow Corning 995.  This can be purchased at your local hardware or home improvement store.
